Summary
The project aims to develop genetic tools for precision breeding of red clover, with an emphasis on increasing resistance to biotic stressors; it focuses on the development of genetic markers to identify resistance to selected viral and fungal diseases. These genetic markers enable rapid and accurate detection of genes associated with resistance, which facilitates the selection and breeding process. The project aims to develop breeding material for pre-breeding, the initial phase of breeding, during which genotypes with desired traits are examined and selected for subsequent use in actual crossbreeding. Achieving these goals should lead to the development of new red clover varieties with high resistance and improved traits, which could have a positive impact on yields, longevity, and the sustainability of growing this important forage crop.
