Summary

The aim is to develop methodology that will lead to the protection of endangered bumblebee species such as Bombus subterraneus, B. distinguendus, B. ruderatus, B. confusus and B. veteranus. The sub-objectives are: i) to determine level of inbreeding using whole-genome sequencing and to propose procedures for prevention of inbreeding, ii) to determine the relationship between level of inbreeding and vitality of colonies, the occurrence of pathogens and the composition of the microbiome, iv) to determine the nutritional requirements in connection with colony establishment, v) to propose suitable procedures and habitats for reintroduction of species into the wild. Based on results, a methodology for breeding and reintroduction into the wild with a reduced risk of extinction will be proposed.
